A LOOK INTO DEATH

Overview: This project aims to investigates the correlations between the number one cause of death, Cardio Vascular Disease (CVD), with certain risk factors such as no exercise, high blood pressure, obesity, etc. Understanding the trends and behaviors of such disease can help the government and researchers to allocate fundings and resources toward more pressing matters.

Data Sources: Data for leading causes of death is obtained from the National Center for Health Statistics. This data contains the top 10 leading causes of death in the 50 states and the District of Columbia from 1999 to 2016. Data for CVD risk factors is obtained from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This data contains the percentage of population that exhibits certain risk factors for each of the 3,141 United States counties.

States with the most and least death by CVD in 2016

The data is obtained by calculating the percentage of death by CVD out of all causes for every state in 2016. This plot only shows the 10 states with the highest and lowest rates.

New York and Minnesota are the two states with the most and least death by CVD out of all causes. The difference between these two states is about 13%.

Risk Factors

How to: Select from the drop down menu to explore different factors. The tooltip shows state name, the percentage of death by CVD, and the percentage of population that exhibits certain risk factor.

Overall, there seems to be no correlation between death by CVD and risk factors like having no exercise, eating few fruits and vegetables, obesity, and high blood pressure.
